Tennis instruction:

The service in principle is a very simple motion, nevertheless many people make it difficult for themselves. In essence the serve is just a regular throwing montion just like in; a baseball pitch, throwing a javelin or throwing a stone.

First if you are a beginner do not even try to understand the grips or whatever other complexities. Instead, go to an open field with a friend and take turns at tossing tennis balls at each other baseball style at about 8 meters distance.

After about 10 tosses each increase the distance another 4 meters between you.

You will notice that as the distance between you and your friend increases the more you feel the need to use the non throwing arm, you will tend to extend it and aim at your friend in a pointing motion and recoil as you throw.

Another ten tosses and increase the distance another 4 meters between you.

At this point you will have a need to start tossing the ball upwards with an arch and you are pretty close to what your service motion will be like.

If you feel strong you can increase another 4 meter distance and your arches will be even more pronounced. Otherwise go to the next step.

Get a hold of your tennis and simulate the throwing motion you just did and make gure it feels exactely the same way as when you were throwing the ball at each other.

Now the distance beween you and your friend should be at least 20 meters or about 20 yards, give it a try with the tennis racket, toss the ball with one hand and hit it with the racket on the other hand. Do not think to much, just throw the racket at the ball in the same fation you were tossing the ball at your friend. Do it a few times and adjust the contact to the hit-up motion you were using to throw the ball in the last phase.

Remember if there is any hinderence or blockage in the relaxed motion of your wrist (what is called pronation) it means that you are holding the racket with an improper grip, change it and try again until it feels as relaxed as when you were throwing the ball at each other.

Once you get used to this you already have the right grip for the serve and the awkward forehand grip syndrome will never plague you.

This may be a small step in your service but it is a giant step towards the future of your overall game! Now get going! Call a friend and try it out. :)
