Wimbledon 2007 a bore? PDF Print E-mail
Yesterday I had the opportunity to watch a few girls and boys playing at Wimbledon as well as see Nicolas Kiefer dismantle Filipo Volandri the Roger Federer slayer in Rome.  As much as I love Wimbledon, the serve and volley, the attacks, the touch angle volleys and all the raffinesses only grass allows,  I am more and more tending to believe Wimbledon is a total bore.

Here is why:

There are a bunch of totally meaningless matches.  Most players girls and boys do not even adequately prepare for the event on "grass" or they have absolutely no clue of what is grass court play and I can assure you I know what I am talking about, because I played over 50 tournaments on the surface.

- Just to mention a few of the meaningless matches from players who could careless about grass:

- Filipo Volandri, Potito Starace, Benjamin Becker, Igor Andreev, Anna-Lena Gröenfeld just to name a few.

The combination of poor preparation added to the lack of skills adequate for grass court play and no interest in performing at professional acceptable levels, are turning Wimbledon first round matches into a bore.  I can not bare to see clay court tennis on grass!  Players trying to outrun and out-slug each other eight to 12 feet and more behind the baseline, instead of hugging the line step in and using attacking skills.

Some of you will say but...you coached Jim Courier a baseline slugger and I will tell you, yes I was bored to death watching him on grass and I did my best to try to help Jim with his net game, but you need to have great hands to volley well and Jim's were made out of stone! (on his own words).  Which in the end puts even more merit to his brilliant career.

Of course Roger Federer in the end will thank them all and walk away with the cup once more, but are they really worthy opponents for a Wimbledon titelist or is the tournament almost bordering into a farse?

Your comments are welcome.  :)
