Two Winners at Wimbledon - Roger Federer and Andy Roddick!

It would be the understatement of the year to say that it was a great final!

In a battle that raged on for over 4 and a half hours, only 10 points separated these two players. If we average it to 5 sets we are talking a difference of two points a set between both.

Total Points Won Roddick 213 Federer 223

During the match while the second set was still in progress I sent this message to Claudio Mezzadri who was pretty busy commentating the final match for Swiss TV at Wimbledon:

Hi Claudio,

Roddick is doing well on his attacks because after years and years of attacking cross court almost on every situation against Roger, he now learned from Stefanski to attack down the line.
Roddick still backs up when Federer engages in a rally which Federer did not exploit or the first set would have been his!

Roddicks backhand volley is still weak and vulnerable and could be the key for Roger to win.

Good job!

Best regards

Famous last words, it was like a jinx, I go back to the TV screen and a while later Roddick gets a 6/2 lead in the second set tie breaker and guess what happened?

Andy Roddick makes an atrocious high backhand blunder at set point number four and sends an intended angled high backhand volley sailing cross court wide.

Yes, as I had predicted, the backhand volley indeed cost Andy Roddick the match.  What ever happened after that volley and plenty happened, did not mater!  Roddick would give up all of his trophies, all of them, to have a second chance at that one backhand volley at Wimbledon.

But tennis is like this, often you only have one chance and that is it, you execute you win, you do not, you lose!

Apart from this very unfortunate moment for Andy, he played the best match I ever seen him play and in addition it was against Roger Federer.  My hat off to Andy!

Often I have been critical of Andy because of his senseless cross court attacks and lack of tactical vision, not this time, I could see Roddick has changed, he learned from past lessons and he tried the right things, but he had an opponent that has become larger then life to him, who was also playing great tennis and the best man won, Roger Federer!

Also, in many instances I have questioned the solidity of Roger Federers conditioning, but this time apart from a certain lull in the fourth set, Roger proved to me that he has done the home work outside the court and this time he was truly ready to do battle!

Funny enough, he did not have the mannerisms I strongly dislike and mention in my article Wimbledon Tennis Lessons - Grunt Not Grunt!? , almost as if he or someone else is reading my website. Good for Federer!

Describing the final would be a long tedious exercise, I spare you that, I just take my hat off and bow to two great players who did battle with honor valiance and one of them won.  Roger Federer!
