Wimbledon Tennis Lessons - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - The forehand Inside-out Winner!
In the next video Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon will show us how to hit a great forehand inside out winner! ![]() - On this graphic, player - A (Jo-Wilfried) had set-up this situation with a powerful down the line forehand from outside the court (position A). Player - B (Gobulev) struggled to get it back with a backhand to point A2. - Player - A anticipates a weak shot from his opponent and moves extremely fast from his right side all the way to the left side of the court. This to put himself in ideal position to hit an inside-out forehand winner. - The angle, speed and deflection (ball moving away from opponent) player - A (Jo-Wilfried) imparts to the ball makes it impossibe for player - B (Gobulev) to get to it. - The execution of this shot by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at Wimbledon meets the high standards any top player needs to succeed at this level. - Percentage play - Jo-Wilfried creates a percentage play situation (by stacking 99 percent of the odds in his favor) by anticipating first, second by moving fast, therefore taking away precious time from his already struggling opponent and third, he hits the forehand inside out winner with plenty of pace and pretty flat nixing any chance for Gobulev to have time to reach it.
In the graphic you can see the ball is intended to angle away from the opponent. - Why, when and how should we use the inside out forehand winner? - Pressure - You maintain your opponent concerned about the power of your forehand and keep it posted that any sloppy play on his side will be severely punished! - Tactics - The forehand inside out among other things often leaves you the option of the forehand inside in (down the line) which puts your opponent in a constant guessing situation (Is he going to go right or left?). - Technique - As I said before, the footwork will bring you around and behind the ball but, making enough place between you and the ball plus striking on its left side (as indicated in graphic with little red mark position A2) is fundamental. IMPORTANT NOTE - Just before the final step the carioca step (cross-step right foot crosses in front of left foot) to allow for better body turn. Once again anticipation plays an enormous role in the successful execution of a shot. Nevertheless we must not forget that great effort is put in with the footwork! Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to put himself behind the ball and into striking position has to move incredibly fast. This combination of anticipation and great footwork is the ticket to most inside out forehand winners!
- Results - As in any shot in tennis the forehand inside-out we see Jo-Wilfried Tsonga execute at Wimbledon requires plenty of hard work and focus, that is why your heart must belong to the game.
