How to Master Your Tennis High Backhand Volley! PDF Print E-mail
Mar 20, 2009 at 07:32 AM

The quality of the tennis high backhand volley is connected to having learned how to volley properly at an early age.  Players like Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Lew Hoad, Stefan Edberg and many others had outstanding punishing high backhand volleys.

One of the advantages of having a good/excellent volley is that you pressure your opponents to keep the ball low above the net and the result is often  a missed passing shot into the net!

There are many other reasons why your high backhand volley should be a punishing shot and I am going to show a video to help you with the learning process.

First setup your opponent to give you a high ball!

1. Hit your first volley firm, low and deep to the place where your opponent will have the least chances to pass you.

2. Keep moving forwards closer to the net.

3. Make your split-step and read your opponents intentions.

4. As you bend your legs at the split-step, have your racket head centered and prepared for a volley on either side.

5. No matter how good your opponent may be if your volley is skidding low and deep, he will be struggling to get under the ball and 95 percent of the times he/she is going to give you a high ball. (Be ready!)

4. Faced with a high ball punish it with a crisp decisive* volley usually cross-court with plenty of angle to keep it out of your opponents reach.

5. If necessary go for the lines, with good players you are going to need to.  They get to almost anything!

* Three things you must do:

- Have your racket head above the level of the incoming ball.

- Drive your racket in a high to low motion right through the ball

- rod-laver-backhand-volley

Simultaneously make a forward step toward the ball (you should be making contact with your feet in the air and land the front foot strongly right after contact).

The player in the picture is no other then Rod Laver the best backhand volley of all time (perhaps over all). You can see how he his still flying after contact.

In this video you will see that a much lesser player then Rod Laver can do some of this, past his 55s:
