Tennis instruction video, the backhand approach-shot tennis footwork:
There are three ways to approach the net with the backhand. On this file you will see how to execute two of them.
The first one is called the classical backhand slice approach.
As you will see on the video there is back cross step or carioca step just before and as you make contact with the ball.
This allows the player to pretty much get well under the ball and to use the elastic energy he stored during the cross bend to propell him/her forward toward the net.
Since acceleration and velocity are key to the approach, that extra spring will gain you considerable distance and get you closer to the net quicker.
and many others used this technique to perfection.
The second approach-shot technique is called the modern backhand slice approach.
Ilie Nastase arguably the most genial and without a question the most charismatic tennis player of all time applied this technique effectively.
As you will see on the tennis video it is a simple way to play the approach shot almost on the run. The lack of complex coordinations makes it easy for younger players to learn it.
The third way to approach the net is by taking the ball early on the rise with semi-flat or little topspin hit firm up the line and follow it to the net.
Three elements to remember when you go to the net:
- Do not hit the ball too hard or you will have no time to get in close for a good volleying position.
- Follow the trajectory of the ball and keep it low.
- After you dispatched your opponent to a corner outside the court and got the short ball, about 90 percent of all approach-shots should be down the line.
Have fun improving your tennis.
