Tennis instruction and tips

One of the most important elements of a top class tennis serve is your tennis service ball toss.

If you go looking for answers around the internet or if you have the money to experience it live and go to five different famous tennis teachers in your area or around the world, you will learn the following:

- About 99 percent of them will agree with you on what is shown in the graphic below.

tennis instruction graphic shows how not to change your service toss for different kinds of serve
Which is to toss the ball to a different spot every time you want to execute a different tennis serve. Assuming you are right handed, e.g. toss the ball to your right, Slice Service. Toss the ball out in front, Kick Service. Toss the ball to your left, American Twist Service and so on. I SAY - DO NOT DO THIS! Because if you do, you can count on having your serve put away every time!

The ball toss change would be fine if your opponent on the other side was not trying to beat you. But since he is, I can bet you, he is carefully watching every ball toss variation you make and adjusting hers/his position and grip before you hit the ball!

Smart opponents are not out there guessing, they are watching you and everything you do registers in their brains and if you do the obvious, they will be steps ahead of you and make you pay the price!

So, if you toss the ball to the right for a slice you are shouting to your opponent:

- John, here comes a slice serve! And he will shout back at you, thanks, Bob! And spank a winner out of your serve!

Now, why should you present your opponent with a dead give away on what you are going to do with your service? And is there a better way?

First you should not give anything away! Second, yes, there is a better way and that is:

- Use a single toss for all your service variations.
- Vary the spins at ball contact.
- Use your pronation movement to enhance the spins.
This way your opponent will never read your serve, he will have a lot less reaction time and consequently will make a lot more return errors.

A tip for the ball toss. The term "ball toss" is a bit misleading, because it makes you assume it is a ball throw. For me it is a "ball release" because the ball is softly let go out of your hand. The video below will show it to you in detail.

Have fun improving your tennis.
