The tennis overhead-smash is a very exciting shot because it is like the cake in the party, everyone is looking forward to eat it! You pushed your opponent to the limit and forced him/her to hit a lob and you can not wait to put it away!
And put it away you will, if you follow these simple steps.
1- As your opponent puts the lob into the air, turn sideways and keep your eye/focus on the ball, move in whatever direction you need to to place yourself under it (the ball).
2- In a shortened version of your service motion, lift your hand (ball toss hand) toward the ball and place your racket with a semi-circle motion in the ready position. (Remember do not do this mechanically, execute almost playfully and relaxed, the ball will move faster - watch the girl in the video).
3- Once you have determined that you are in the right position and found the target zone use your natural ball throwing motion to hit the ball.
4- - This the only moment you firm up your grip on your racket and that is when you make contact with the ball out in front of you.
Some important factors to keep in mind:
- Success is important so initially execute the overhead-smash close to the net and as you get better move further back.
- Keep your feet moving and make the slightest adjustments necessary until you are satisfied with your position, this will pay off enormously as you get better or if you are an improving player.
- Tennis is about rhythm, balance and relaxed execution, so time/adjust your shots to the speed of the ball.
- Last, soon you will learn that there are opponents out there that can run like rabbits and will get to almost any shot, so do not lower your guard, as soon as you finished the smash get back into your ready position bouncing lightly and your racket centered and pretty much out in front ready for a volley or another lob.
The girl in the video does hit a top class overhead-smash effortlessly so watch her movements and see if she respects the pointers I gave you above.
As I have once said, I prefer letting young players develop their own grips, I do not teach them, but I rather let them find out.
In this case I will show you the grips the girl in the video found for herself.
Notice how the girl in this tennis video lesson keeps her eye/focus on the ball as she moves toward it and makes all motions in rythym while at the same time stays relaxed.
There you have it, keep it simple, stay relaxed and follow the rhythm of play and you will have an overhead-smash your opponents will respect!
