There is this myth that you need all kind of huge powerful muscles and incredible strength to hit a decent topspin tennis backhand. The truth is you do not need any of that to have the correct technique and excellent shot making.
Why?
Take for example the fragile skinny girl on this tennis video lessons, she has a wide range of shots, hits the ball very clean, technically sound and if she wishes she can put as much zip and acceleration on her shots as any top woman player at WTA level.
Is there a secret to this? Yes and no.
It is all about keeping it simple, relaxed when needed and firm at the right moment.
If you found your right backhand grip it should be easy!
The ready position.
- Facing the court in a neutral posing in the center of the court with your feet bouncing lightly and your racket centered and pretty much out in front..
The back-swing swing
- Take racket back holding the racket head naturally up high and aiming at the highest point of the ball bounce.
The torsion
- On the backhand torsion is important, you should turn/pivot your shoulders until you feel the cross abdominal area of your tummy lock. This is the point when forward motion starts.
The lower body (legs)
- At the locking point your legs are slightly bent pretty much perpendicular to the net, this is the moment when make your forward step into the incoming ball and start unleashing the awesome power you have just stored at your abdominal area.
The forward swing
- Because you have so much help from the abdominal area your racket will accelerate with tremendous ease and power. Let slightly the racket head drop when you start your forward swing to get a bit under the ball.
Tennis ball Contact
- This the only moment you firm up your grip on your racket as you hit the ball out in front of you.
The finish
- Once again your grip will relax and you let your racket flow trough the shot as far as it will want to go without you trying to stop it.
- The legs especially the front one will lift up and extend upwards, in case of very powerful strikes you can end up completely off the ground ( but that is for more advanced players, at this stage try to get solid and steady).
The girl in the video does hit a top class topsin tennis backhand so watch her movements and see if she respects the pointers I gave you above.
As I have said before I prefer letting young players develop their own grips, I do not teach them, but I rather let them find out.
In this case I will show you the grip the girl in the video found for herself.
Notice how the girl in this tennis video lesson fights to step into the ball and to stay close to the line. :-)
There you have it, keep it simple, keep it relaxed and you will have a great backhand forever!
Post a comment on this page letting me know if you are improving your tennis backhand and then send me a video of your backhand I will personally look for more ways to help you improve it.
