Roger Federer - Backhand Slice Lob PDF Print E-mail

In this tennis video lesson sequence Roger Federer demonstrates, how important playing intelligence is.

Roger simply blocks an hard (too hard) forehand ATTACK from Andy Roddick and places the ball cross court low to Roddicks backhand.

As usual Andy makes two capital mistakes:

1. Technically he breaks down, by leaning forward and bending at waist level, instead of bending his knees and keeping his upper body straight to volley.

2. He volleys a cross court low volley back cross court to his opponent, instead of volleying or drop-volleying down the line, the second choice problably being the best to ensure the most running for his opponent.

Roger who is familiar with this weakness from Andy, does not even bother recovering to the center of the court, simply stays right there, makes a step toward the incoming volley and scoops it up above the head of a frustrated Roddick, that is too close to the net.

Roger could have lobed down the line, but he chose the percentage lob cross court, where the ball has more distance to travel (the court is longer) and where his opponent will be the most stretched to reach it.

Roddick is so frustrated that he does not even try to run it down.

To say something positive the commentators laud Rogers "genious", but in reality the only one to blame is Roddick for making his opponent look good.

This tennis video lessons from Rogers side shows how and when to play a slice agressive lob and from Andys side what not to do in that volley situation.
