The tennis drop-shot is a double wedged weapon it can help you win or it can ruin you.

Where is the difference?

In the way you play it and when you play it.

The way you play it involves your position on the court, technique, disguise and tactics.

1. You must be either inside the court or very close to the baseline.

2. Your opponent was driven out of the court and well behind the baseline.

3. You have practiced the shot frequently and are confident about its execution.

4. You hide your intention to drop-shot by pretending you are hitting a winning forehand or backhand and at the last second switch to a drop-shot.

5. You know your opponent is uncomfortable coming to the net and you want to break his nice left right rhythm at the baseline.

When you play it, should be tied to the score.

1. Do drop-shot as a variation when you are up 40-0 on your serve or your opponents serve and carefully if you are 30-0 or 40-15.

2. Do not drop-shot at 30-30, 40-40, 40-30, 30-40, you are bringing in your opponent and putting yourself under pressure to pass.

3. Drop shot preferably on your opponents service games, you do not want to put extra pressure on your own service.

4. Drop shot on your own services only if it is an obvious situation.

5. Do not drop shot in tie breakers unless you are leading 5-1 or 6-1 and even then I would be cautious.

In this clip notice how Djokovic first drove David Ferrer out of the court behind the baseline and that Novack himself is close to his baseline line. Also he is aware that David just does not like to come to the net unwillingly.
