There were many players in the past which had great tennis serve and volley talent, Pete Sampras ranks amoung the very best. In this sequence Pete served a pretty hard second serve, but Boris Becker read it well, took it on the rise and muscled it to Petes feet. What is here to learn? - A second serve, even on grass, can be a liability. But if you have to serve and volley on it, you have to be gutsy, place it well and serve pretty hard with plenty of spin! - Stay calm if caught with a difficult half-volley, keep your racket head open and steady at contact. Use soft hands to control this shot to a spot short out in front of you with no angles for your opponent to pass you. - Close into the net by moving forwards following the line of the ball you have just played, split step and finish with a forward step into a volley to the open court behind your opponent. Quick reactions and total alertness are a must. Use Pete Sampras tennis video lessons for the serve and volley, he was a great champion and a master at it.
