Why is the Italian Open such a difficult tennis tournament to win? PDF Print E-mail

How Rome can be a stepping stone to winning Roland Garros?

If the best of 5 sets was played from round one and the draw was 128, it would be more difficult to win than Roland Garros which is undoubtably the hardest of them all.

We could ask the question 'What about the US Open on hard courts, the Australian in the searing sun and Wimbledon on grass? Yes, they are really tough tournaments to win, but given that any clay court match demands a lot more on physical, mental and technical resources from the players, I can not help but rank the Italian Open as very difficult if not more difficult to win than those.

ATP Calendar Beats Rafael Nadal in Rome! PDF Print E-mail

Is the ATP calendar really that tough? And Did Rafael Nadal fall prey to it?

Today an injured Rafael Nadal falls prey to someone he has never lost to on clay, Juan Carlos Ferrero (J. Ferrero (ESP) d. [2] R. Nadal (ESP) 75 61).

Pretty convincing result and by Carlos Ferrero antics, dropping to his knees, it looked like a great win. But was it really? Or is it just a case of you take whatever you can get? To me it looked mostly like the second scenario and Rafael Nadal confirmed it at the press conference with the following:

Can Federer win at Roland Garros Against Rafael Nadal? PDF Print E-mail
It could be too presumptuous to even assume that there will be another final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the French Open 2008. There is a long list of excellent clay court players that in any given day on a five set match could beat either Rafa or Federer.

For the sake of commentary, let us agree that a final between Nadal and Federer does happen and I will try to answer the title question.

After carefully watching the Monaco ATP Masters Series 2008 tennis video final, it became apparent to me that for Federer to win against Nadal at the French Open, there is no revision of what I have been saying and writing for years, including The Book on Nadal or The Lion Effect – THE ATTACK!

Nevertheless, what bewilders me is whether Roger Federer really means or realized what he said at the press conference:

The Mental Turning Point in Tennis! PDF Print E-mail

and how to win tennis matches that you are losing today!

How many times have you found yourself in a winning position and all of a sudden see everything melt down or fizzle into defeat?

Nikolay Davidenko is an example of a player that can be among the best in the world today, but who becomes an average Joe when playing Roger Federer and he has proven this once more at the Estoril Open in Portugal.

In professional tennis winning the first point when your opponent is serving is the opening of the door to a break, a 30 love lead is almost a guaranteed break a 40-15 score is tantamount to a break. Coming back in a tie breaker from 4-0 and a 5-2 deficit to a 5-5 situation and serving to go 6-5 ahead is an enormous psychological edge. Davidenko went through all of that in the Estoril final and still lost the set 7/6 to Roger Federer!

Why Should Tennis Players Respect All Past Champions? PDF Print E-mail
To understand tennis players greatness one has to know and understand that any champion at any given era could be a threat to any other champion in any other era.

This brings me back to some conversations I had with young Pete Sampras and Jim Courier when I coached Jim back in 1988, 89 and 90 and we traveled and trained together many times. Those two young bucks then, were pretty cocky and in some ways they respected history and the old guard, but they thought they knew better and tennis had become much better then in the past, which is natural in a young person. Once in a while I bored them to death with one of my stories on how many of the old champions could have beaten anyone in any given era. And also told them why they, as young players, should respect that and keep those players in high esteem.
