Is professional tennis Coaching a profession? |
Just spent some time reading an article about tennis coaches on ESPN and I can not agree more with José Higueras, yes he is right “Coaches are highly overrated” and in my opinion professional tennis coaching is berated!
Nevertheless, the challenge for tennis coaches is much deeper than what Greg Garber portrays on his ESPN sports article
with a few quotes from “famous coaches”. It encompasses several layers of responsibility and competence that Mr. Garber never mentioned:
Tennis Coaching is a cottage industry:

Wimbledon Thursday 26, 2008
Matches that could turn dangerous for established players!
Predicting tennis matches especially on grass is a tough proposition, but life is fun when we take risks and after Wimbledon is over I can erase this bit, so why not? No, no, I will keep it published, I like to stand for what I belive in or write.

What is in a Champion? Why is Roger Federer so special? |
Some of you may think because I did not stand-up for Roger Federer poor preparation for the French Open final that I do not like Roger!
You very far from the truth. Since Pete Sampras and before that John McEnroe, there is no other player that pleases me to watch play tennis more other than Roger Federer.
When I am critical of Roger it is because I believe he is capable of a lot more on the clay and because I sincerely doubt that he has ever prepared himself physically to win a clay court tournament such as Roland Garros. My perspective is simple, Roger has based his performances at Roland Garros on his talent and not in the hard physical work it takes to win a tournament that will take you well beyond your mental, tactical and physical resources.

In Roland Garros - Roger Federer Fell Victim to his Lack of Respect for Jose Higueras! |

Hiring a Coach means giving enough time for the Coach to work with you and prepare a tactical plan that will work against the player you want to beat!
Roger himself did not, but the pundits in the press made a grand fanfare, that this time Federer was taking Roland Garros seriously by presenting his new Coach Jose Higueras at the Estoril Open in April. Any expert and person knowledgeable of the tennis game would recognize, that a win in Estoril, a minor tournament with such low-level opposition, was totally meaningless to Roger Federer. He could have done the same stunt with a challenger!
The key though was to give José Higueras time to prepare Roger and that was literally not done, as the sequence of events shows, following an easy win in Estoril:

Remembering Arthur Ashe - A Player of Exception! |
Today I was looking through the Tennis Groups at Yahoo, when I came upon a group which had the picture of Arthur Ashe holding the Wimbledon 1975 Cup. I stopped to remember the Barcelona Open 1974! Yes that far back!
Then I was a qualifier in the Barcelona Open and during the tournament, through a request from Wojtek Fibak, I gave him the possibility to switch our qualifying spots for the Tehran qualies which at the time were also played in Barcelona.
The reason being for Fibak to have a bye (which I had in the Tehran draw) was so he could play only against Arthur Ashe the next day, instead of a Tehran match in the morning and Arthur in the afternoon on the same day.
